Helping to make Network Scouting available to all

As with any voluntary organisation, running a Scout Network not only takes up a lot of time but also costs money to run. Our main project at the moment is repairing and refurbishing a previously-disused HQ in Littleover. We also try and subsidise training and some of the more expensive activities and trips away - for example, the Norway sailing trip in July 2008.

We are always keen to take on new fundraising opportunities and are able to call on others within Scouting to get extra numbers if necessary. Our members have gained experience in, amongst others: car parking, event marshalling, leaflet deliveries, car washing, litter picking, setting up stalls at fairs, etc.

Details of our latest fundraising efforts and associated news can be found below. If you have any ideas or opportunities for fundraising, please get in touch.

Sainsbury's partnership week

03-10-2007

From today until next Tuesday, 9th October, there is a national partnership week between Sainsbury's and The Scout Association. We and the rest of Derby South District Scouts have been allocated the store on Osmaston Park Road, Sinfin, and will be running a variety of events in store. The aim is to recruit youth members, adult leaders/helpers, raise money and generally show what Scouting in Derby is all about. Representatives of the District team, Scout groups, Explorer units and Lynx Network will be in-store in the evenings from approximately 1700 until 2000, as well as all day Saturday and Sunday. Raffle tickets will be on sale, and members will be offering bag packing services. We also have full use of the foyer for recruitment stands and displays, and will be running a family fun day in the car park on Saturday.

18-02-2008 UPDATE

We have just learned that our share of the funds raised during the Sainsbury's event was a fantastic £321.50. We are currently deciding what this money will be spent on - possibilities including subsidisation of the Norway and other sailing trips and contributing towards training for the Single Pitch Award (SPA) climbing qualification for a number of our members.

HQ opening and BBQ

28-07-2007

Yesterday we held a successful HQ opening BBQ and social, to which over 30 turned up. The burgers and chocolate muffins went down a treat and it looks as though we have raised a small amount of money, although it was run mostly for the social side.

TIPEC 2007

18-06-2007

On Sunday, 24th June, we will be helping out at The Independent Porsche Enthusiasts Club event at Thoresby Park, in Nottinghamshire. After camping overnight Saturday, we will be on site to help coordinate car parking and litter picking.

25-06-2007 UPDATE

Eighteen members of Lynx Network and Explorer Scout units from Littleover and Aston on Trent coordinated the parking of hundreds of Porsches and members of the general public at TIPEC 2007 yesterday, the annual gathering of The Independent Porsche Enthusiasts Club, at Thoresby Park in Nottinghamshire. The rain was relentless and the team worked hard, earning a well deserved £350 to be shared between the three units involved.

Download Festival 2007 tent clear up

07-06-2007

This coming Monday, 11th June, Lynx and other Networks from around Derbyshire will be helping to clear up abandoned tents following the Download Festival 2007, at Donington Park. Any usable tents will be transported up to Drum Hill to be sorted out. It is intended that the equipment will be there for the use of all Derbyshire Scouts. The various Network units involved will also receive funds for helping with the clear up.

13-06-2007 UPDATE

Today we appeared in the Derby Evening Telegraph alongside Phoenix Network, following the post-Download Festival tent clear-up. The story can be found online here. We've also just heard that we will receive £130 for the work we did, which will go towards funding repairs and improvements to our HQ and purchasing equipment.

Donation from E.ON

21-03-2007

We have just received confirmation from E.ON, the world's largest energy company, that they will donate £250 to Lynx Scout Network to help pay for equipment and the renovation of our HQ. The members of Lynx Network are very grateful to the company for their support. This donation was through the company's community programme for employees involved in voluntary organisations, and the application was made by Lynx Network HQ Manager and E.ON employee Martin.

Stamp & Deliver 2006

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Derby Stamp & Deliver, with special silver stamps being issued alongside the usual yellow ones. Last collection was on Friday December 15th and sales of stamps have now ceased. Thank you to everyone that has supported the scheme by buying stamps - also to the people and businesses that have been selling them for us.

Many of us have been involved in Stamp & Deliver for many years, through Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers. And we still can't escape it in Network!

Each year we help to sort and deliver thousands of cards, and you can often see us walking the streets of Derby on Saturday & Sunday mornings throughout December, whatever the weather! In the evenings, we help Polaris Explorer Scout Unit to sort the thousands of cards for delivery across Littleover, Blagreaves and Old Normanton. Then at weekends, Lynx Network members will be out delivering cards across Littleover. The money raised from the sale of 15p stamps is split between the Scout groups involved and the nominated charity - which this year is Derbyshire Children's Holiday Centre.

Mobile phones and ink cartridges

An ongoing appeal!!!

In conjunction with Polaris Explorers, we are currently collecting unwanted/broken mobile phones and used ink cartridges. The money raised will be used mainly to subsidise the planned offshore sailing trip in June and transport costs for other future activities.

If you have any unwanted/broken mobile phones or ink cartridges of any type, please contact us.
